Back to the Future... FutureFashion, that is

Looks like Barneys is getting serious about getting green. For the upcoming New York Fashion Week, the venerable department store's Julie Gilhart helped Earth Pledge to recruit some of the world's top designers for its Future Fashion runway show. According to WWD,
Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Jil Sander, Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Narciso Rodriguez and Versace are among the companies that have signed up for Earth Pledge's FutureFashion Jan. 31 runway show at Gotham Hall. Aside from kicking off New York Fashion Week, the event, in which the designers will create one-of-a-kind designs, is geared toward raising awareness about the need to use sustainable materials in the fashion industry. The aim is to promote renewable, reusable and nonpolluting materials and methods.

Now if only the designers (in addition to committed eco-warrior Ms. McCartney, that is) would create more than one sustainable design. Oh, and actually put it on the market... But hey, creating awareness is definitely a first step in the right direction.
